After two days of steady downpour the snails that inhabit the small patches of lawn around my apartment building began appearing in great numbers on the sidewalks. It was like a snail <a href="http://saudiembassy.net/Publications/MagSpring00/HAJJ.htm">Hajj</a>. The human occupants of the block had to contend not only with the unusual rain, but with the carpet of snails that the rain had wrought. Needless to say, many snails have perished in the last few days, leaving a grisly spectacle that would have inspired <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/offer-listing/0571130151/ref=dp_primary-product-display_1//104-4887417-3279907?condition=all">Siegfried Sassoon</a> to take up the pen. Poor bastards.
